Half-Pipe is my first DIY active wheelchair for children. It is based on my adult sized designs. Half-Pipe is intended for active children with full upper body function and control. It has minimal postural support. As with all DIY builds, it can be customized as needed.

Half-Pipe is a trike wheelchair with a central anti-tipping wheel in the rear. Therefore, it is both stable forward and backwards. The caster wheel size is 3" which performs best on smooth and hard surfaces.

Insurnace companies typically pay for a new wheelchair every five years even for rapidily developing children. Therefore, at any given time most wheelchair using children are using a wheelchair that doesn't fit their current size and stage of development. Many times, their wheelchairs are configured to in a manner that makes it easier for their parents to push them at the expensive of their independent mobility.

By having a second DIY wheelchair, the child can experience a highly mobile wheelchair use while in and around the home, while also having a traditional wheelchair for family outings.
